  • Question: My positive experience with Accutane

Hi everyone! Thanks for posting...they have all been very interesting to read! I thought I would finally add my experience to the pile.

I had bad acne since I was about 12 -- not cystic -- but pretty bad acne. For years I went to dermatologists and they said it was not bad enough to go on accutane. Everything I tried, failed. Some creams and pills helped a little, but nothing make it go completely away. When I got to college I tried a new dermatologist. She said that I could definitely try accutane. (My father was on it in his teens and it worked wonders -- so I was up for it!) I was on it for about five months. The first couple of months my acne got significantly worse (I hear that that is common). I had some bad side effects, like extremely chapped lips and very dry eyes (couldn't wear contacts for days at a time). Some people consider these side effects not worth it...but for me, anything was worth putting up with to get rid of my acne. From what I have read about accutane, you do run a risk of much more severe side effects...fortunately for me, I have not experienced any of these (all of my side effects are now gone).

Today my acne is 95% gone...I still have the occasional small break out or two, but for the most part, it is all gone. It sounds cheesy, but accutane literally changed my life.....it was a success for sure! I have a lot more self confidence and feel great! It has been about 5 months since I've been off the drug, and I still look and feel fine.

I am very thankful for finding my dermatologist and for being put on accutane.
